Girl dies after falling into river in Bamble

The girl who was found lifeless in Herreelva in Bamble on Friday died on Sunday morning. The cause of death is currently unknown.

The girl will be autopsied, police station chief Annie Sandersen at Grenland Police Station told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

The junior high school student was flown to the hospital in critical condition after falling into the river on Friday morning. Witnesses got her out of the water and carried out first aid.

Cause of death unknown

The cause of death is currently unknown, police lawyer Ingrid Wiik told newspaper Telemarksavisa. At the same time, the police say that it is probable that the girl fell off her bicycle and into the water, as the bicycle was found nearby.

The incident has shaken the entire local community, and many have seen what has happened, Mayor Hallgeir Kjeldal said on Friday.

The Municipality’s crisis team has contacted family, relatives, and witnesses.
