On Wednesday, Minister of Education and Integration Guri Melby (V) is presenting a new action plan with five different focus areas and 33 measures against negative social control.

“The freedom to decide over one’s own life is fundamental in our society. All people have the right to live their lives in freedom from negative social control, honor-related violence, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation,” Melby noted in a press release.

The five focus areas in the action plan include, among other measures, efforts aimed at newly arrived refugees and immigrants, strengthened legal protection for vulnerable people, prevention of involuntary stays abroad, and international cooperation.

“Negative social control and honor-related violence can be barriers to integration. It is important that prevention starts early and takes place in several areas,” Melby emphasized.
