Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been killed in an attack on his home, minister Claude Joseph told local media.

An unidentified group attacked Moïse’s private residence at 1 o’clock on the night between July 6 and 7. The president was fatally wounded, Joseph wrote in a statement that the news sites Juno7. and VBI reported.

Joseph condemned the attack. He signed the statement as “acting prime minister,” despite Moïse appointing a new prime minister, Ariel Henry, on Monday.

First lady Martine Moïse is said to have been wounded in the same attack.

Moïse has ruled the Caribbean country since February 2017. The October 2019 election was canceled, in part as a result of widespread protests against Moïse. The president has ruled by decree since the previous National Assembly’s term expired in January last year.
