For every kilo of Norwegian halal meat sold,  the Islamic Council in Norway gets one krone for providing the certification . Last year, this gave them 2.4 million kroner in revenue.

The Revenues from certification, which also includes management fees, is thus far more than double the 966,000 kroner  that Islamic Council received in government grants last year writes Klassekampen, which has been given insight into the organization’s accounts.

Halal Slaughtering means that a Muslim must be present and give a prayer of thanksgiving. The slaughter itself happens with a knife after the animal has been anesthetized, and conducted in accordance with Norwegian regulations on animal welfare.

General Secretary Mehtab Afsar says Islamic Council of Norway has focused on systematic and professional halal work, which he believes benefits both the Muslim population and society in general.

– Availability of halal food can contribute to more inclusion and integration into society. Our certification work can create new jobs and contribute to reducing contraband meat, says Afsar. Islamic Council has two employees who work with the certification scheme.
