Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) wants more intensive care nurses at Norwegian hospitals.

“The corona pandemic has made it clear that we must intensify the work of raising the number of intensive care nurses,” Høie told the magazine Sykepleien.

Høie instructed Norwegian hospitals in the health regions to create 100 new educational positions in intensive care from January.

More nurses needed

The health regions will also have to study the future need for intensive care capacity and strengthen the work of recruiting, developing, and retaining intensive care nurses in the hospitals.

It has not yet been determined how the 100 positions will be distributed between the health regions.

“We have taken the serious step of giving assignments to increase the number of educational places (for intensive care nurses). We’re doing it now, as it is so important to get started,” Høie said.
