Health workers in the UK are seven times more likely than others to have a severe COVID-19 disease course when they get corona, a new study shows.

Defective protective equipment also contributes to the vulnerability of this occupational group, the study states.

The researchers have also found that people with jobs in the care and transport sectors have twice the risk of developing a serious disease course compared with other occupational groups.

The study was carried out by academics from the University of Glasgow, Syracuse University in the USA, and the University of Limerick in Ireland.

The study was published on Tuesday in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine and is based on data from the shutdown in the UK during the first wave of the pandemic from March to May.
