The Norwegian Directorate of Health has stopped updating daily figures of people admitted to hospitals with the coronavirus. The Ministry of Health says the change is due to the fact that the epidemic has passed its peak in Norway.
The daily hospitalization statistics have been frequently used by the Norwegian media during the corona pandemic, and the hospitalization figures have recently been at a record high level in connection with the omicron variant and the reopening of society.
Nevertheless, the daily admission statistics updates are being discontinued.
“The data shows that the spread of infection is still at a high level, but the epidemic has passed the peak and shows a clearly declining trend. The National Institute of Public Health publishes figures on a daily basis, including figures on new hospital admissions. Therefore, it is not considered appropriate to continue with daily reports on the number of admissions of people with coronavirus,” the Ministry told NTB.
Weekly updates
Instead, the Norwegian Directorate of Health will post weekly updates.
“Reporting routines can be changed at short notice if the infection situation develops in a negative direction,” the Ministry added.
The Ministry further stated that both the FHI and the Norwegian Directorate of Health would continue publishing weekly reports.
“The FHI’s weekly reports provide an overview of, among other things, the epidemiological situation, while the Norwegian Directorate of Health’s report mainly provides an overview of the burden on the health services,” the Ministry concluded.
