A total of 373 completely new vehicles will be distributed in all of Norway’s police districts during 2022, the Ministry of Justice announced, calling the investment historic.

“This is an important initiative that will strengthen the police’s ability to be more present where people live,” Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Emilie Enger Mehl (SP) noted in a press release.

Last year, the police spent less money than normal, which has led the Police Directorate (POD) to buy vehicles and equipment for NOK 220 million, which are distributed to the police districts, Kripos, and the Police Academy. The government plans to procure 169 more police cars than planned.

“Many police districts have reported that they have old and outdated equipment. These signals are taken seriously by the government. This purchase will help reduce the average age of the police car fleet, and it is important in our work to strengthen the police throughout the country,” Mehl said.

NOK 50 million of the pot will go to new equipment and materials such as drones, analysis instruments for drugs, protective masks, speedometers, forensic equipment, and bulletproof protective equipment.
