As of Wednesday, new rules will come into force for the au pair scheme. Families that exploit their au pair may lose their right to have au pairs forever.

The amendment, which applies from July 1, applies both when the host family has violated the terms of the au pair permit and when a person in the host family has committed criminal offences against the au pair, writes the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Management.

So far, only temporary exclusion has been granted for such conditions. In addition, the Ministry tightens the severity of the relationship and how early the exclusion can be imposed.

On July 1, a change will also come into effect where applicants and reference persons in family immigration cases may be required to pass a DNA test. Until now, this has only been required in cases where the family relationship must be established.
