The trial against the ship’s doctor and the captain of the Hurtigruten ship, where corona infection broke out in July 2020, starts in Nord-Troms District Court on Monday.

The captain and the ship’s doctor were fined NOK 30,000 and NOK 40,000, respectively. Both refuse to pay the fine, and the case will start in Nord-Trom’s district court on Monday, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) writes.

The fines were issued for failure to notify the Norwegian authorities. The ship’s doctor was also fined for shortcomings in the exercise of his profession as part of health personnel.

The central issue in the case will be what the management on shore actually knew – and who made the decision not to notify authorities of an outbreak of infection on board a cruise ship.

A total of 386 people were quarantined, and 71 were infected in the outbreak on Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen.

The captain’s lawyer, Fredrik Brodwall, did not want to comment on the case before the start of the trial. The ship’s doctor’s lawyer, Per Zimmer, said his client is looking forward to the trial.

Hurtigruten has previously adopted a fine of NOK 1 million for breaches of the Ship Safety Act and the Infection Control Act.
