“Hyperresistant” bacteria discovered in Antarctica

Researchers have discovered bacteria in Antarctica that are resistant to both antibiotics and disinfectants, SVT writes.

The bacteria can pose a risk when the ice melts in step with climate change, the channel writes.

“It is alarming in terms of climate change, as we know that the Antarctic Peninsula, where the study was conducted, is one of the places where ice melts the fastest,” researcher Andrés Marcoleta at the University of Chile noted.

“More and more bare soil, which can contain large amounts of bacteria with these ‘hyper-resistant’ properties, is being exposed,” he added.

If these properties are transferred to widespread disease-causing bacteria, it could have serious consequences.

“In a possible scenario, these genes can leave the area and contribute to the creation and spread of infectious diseases,” Marcoleta added.
