A total of 14,869 bicycle thefts were reported to Norwegian insurance companies last year. That corresponds to an increase of 16% from the previous year.

According to the insurance company If, almost every fourth bicycle that is stolen is an electric bicycle.

“We see an increase in the number of electric bicycles that are stolen. The electric bikes are often brand new.

“Bicycle thieves go after expensive bicycles, both with and without electrical assistance. It is not at all unusual that such bicycles are priced at NOK 20,000-30,000,” communications manager Sigmund Clementz in If noted.

Compensation for bicycle thefts has never been higher than last year. Payments increased by 21% from 2019, to over NOK 124 million.

  1. I unfortunately got my cycle stolen on a saturday on a T-bane stasjon knowing that it would be secure if i do so but the unexpected thing happened. I usually leave my cycle on he parking thing with my lock on the weekend cause i usually work on the weekends. So, i left my cycle on a afternoon and went to work . After i came from work,it was suddenly gone .Not a single thing was left .Neither the cycle or the lock itself. I was shocked coz i always though oslo had on of the most secure parking system .It was a expensive cycle for someone who is just 17 and works for a minimal pay and it costed me around 7000 kr to be detailed. I’ve neved experienced such a thing in my entire life.I hope the thief will be caught soon .
