There is no evidence that the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in more marital breakdowns in Norway. However, from March to October, the number of weddings fell by 22% compared to 2019.

Still, only 5,715 separations took place during this period – 253 fewer than in 2019, and the lowest number in the last ten years, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

“So far, we can’t see any specific corona effect in the figures for separations,” Ane Margrete Tømmerås at SSB noted.

The corona pandemic has had a greater consequence for the fall in marriages, she believes.

” Much of the decline can probably be attributed to the corona pandemic and infection control measures, which has led many to choose to postpone the wedding,” Tømmerås said.
