In the past year, Norway’s Police Security Service (PST) followed up on around 500 reports of concern about radicalization. “An increasing number of tips is related to minors,” a senior adviser noted.

The tips are divided along the lines of right-wing extremism and extreme Islamism, the newspaper Aftenposten writes.

“If we fear that someone encourages violence or will carry out violent acts ourselves, we follow up on them,” senior adviser Annett Aamodt in the Police Security Service (PST) told the newspaper.

The tips that are followed up are so serious that they must be processed to clarify whether the person has the intention and capacity to commit a violent act.

Hundreds of tips

Aamodt noted that in the last year, the PST received between 400 and 500 reports of concern or tips about people that the PST has chosen to follow up – but that the total number of tips is far greater.

The tips come in via email, the PST’s tips portal, the police and cooperating organizations, and those who receive tips in the PST warn that the number of tips about minors is increasing.

“There is still a predominance of tips related to young adults. That is, people aged 18 to 35 years,” Aamodt added.
