The local fire brigade had to deal with the aftermath of the death on Varaldsøy without help from the police, who arrived after 70 minutes.

A woman in her 40s was found dead on Varaldsøy in Kvinnherad on Thursday night. A man in his 40s was arrested and charged with murder the same evening. He denies criminal guilt.

At 8:05 PM, the fire brigade in Kvinnherad received a report of a dead woman, according to Thomas Hallquist, fire brigade chief on duty in Kvinnherad. The police in Bergen were informed 35 minutes later.

“There’s a gap. Maybe it has been perceived as an accident. It is far too early to conclude,” Kvinnherad sheriff Sigurd Børve told newspaper Bergens Tidende on Friday night.

Geographical factors

At 9:50 PM, the police patrol was on the scene and got control of the suspect after a short time. A total of 70 minutes had passed since the police received the report – and an hour and 15 minutes since the fire brigade registered the assignment.

Lensman Sigurd Børve says it took time to get there due to the distance and believes the police couldn’t get to the place faster.

“There are geographical factors, the distance, and the fact that we had to cross a fjord to reach the island. We had to order an emergency ferry. These are the conditions we live under in District Norway,” he told Aftenposten.
