The EU does not want to extend the vaccine contracts with AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson when they expire, an anonymous source told the newspaper La Stampa.

The Italian newspaper refers to information from an unnamed source in the Italian Ministry of Health.

Apparently, there is an agreement between the EU Commission and many EU countries to eventually drop vaccines based on so-called virus vector technology. Both the AstraZeneca vaccine and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine fall under that category.

The plan will therefore be not to extend the contracts with the two companies next year.

Other sources have not confirmed la Stampa’s information. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is also known as the Janssen vaccine.

Investigations are still being carried out due to concerns about the increased risk of rare blood clots among those who have taken the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
