Japan has asked China to stop taking anal swab coronavirus tests on its citizens when they enter the country.

Several Japanese travelers have complained that the procedure caused them “psychological distress,” according to officials.

China started carrying out anal corona swabs in January of 2021.

“Some Japanese reported to our embassy in China that they received anal swab tests, which caused great psychological pain,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said.

It is currently unknown how many Japanese citizens had to go through such tests, he added.

Complaints

Such tests are used on some of the people quarantined or entering China, he noted, adding that their use “has not been confirmed anywhere else in the world.”

China had not so far responded to the request, he said, adding that the Japanese government had made the request through the embassy in Beijing, the BBC reports.

Last week, China denied it required US diplomats to undergo anal tests. The US media reported that diplomats complained about the testing procedure.
