King Harald is doing well after the heart valve operation he underwent on Friday, according to his personal doctor Bjørn Bendz.
“The king has had a short walk, and his condition is good,” Bendz said.
King Harald underwent heart valve surgery at Rikshospitalet on Friday morning.
On the same day, it became clear that he would remain in the hospital for the weekend.
He is also on sick leave until October.
Operated in 2005
Both Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja visited the king at Rikshospitalet on Friday.
King Harald also underwent an operation on the heart valve between the heart and the main artery in 2005.
An artificial heart valve was then inserted.
Such heart valves usually have a “lifespan” of 10 to 15 years.
Therefore, it is not uncommon for such interventions to have to be repeated after some time – in the king’s case, after 15 years.
Such operations are performed several hundred times a year at Rikshospitalet.
