According to the Kremlin, Russia’s recognition of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk also applies to areas currently controlled by Ukrainian forces.

According to President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the recognition, which was ratified by the Duma on Tuesday, applies to areas controlled by the separatists when they proclaimed their independence in 2014.

Ukrainian government forces have since recaptured large parts of the two regions in a war that has claimed the lives of more than 14,000 people.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an order for the Russian military to “preserve the peace” in the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine.
