The Russian economy is suffering, but will stay afloat, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, commenting on the sanctions that Western countries have imposed on Russia.

“There is a certain safety margin, there is potential, there are plans, and work is being done. The economy will stay afloat,” Peskov said in a video conference with foreign journalists on Wednesday, according to CNN.

Russia has been subjected to some of the most severe economic sanctions in world history since the invasion of Ukraine last Thursday.

Among other things, a number of the country’s banks have been banned from the international transaction system Swift, and a number of assets belonging to, among others, the central bank, have been frozen.
