Around 20,000 Lufthansa workers have started a strike that will last just over a day. It will affect 134,000 passengers. 13 flights to and from Norway have been canceled.

Over 1,000 departures, including some flights on Tuesday, have been canceled due to the strike, the AFP news agency reports. Almost all of the company’s Wednesday departures have been canceled.

“All our flights to our hubs in Frankfurt and Munich are affected,” press manager at Lufthansa, Boris Ogursky wrote in an email to NTB.

There are 578 canceled flights to and from Frankfurt, while 345 flights to and from Munich have been canceled. Travelers to and from Norway are also affected, with 13 canceled flights.

The strike only covers the ground staff of the German airline. The trade union Verdi is in negotiations with the company on behalf of the 20,000 strikers. They have rejected Lufthansa’s first salary proposal but have agreed to further negotiations on August 3 and 4.

The employees demand a wage increase of 9.5% to compensate for increased workload, high inflation, and a general decrease in wages during the pandemic, Verdi’s negotiation leader Christine Behle told the German news agency DPA.
