Sweden’s Minister of Finance Magdalena Andersson has been elected the new leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. She will take over from Stefan Löfven.

Andersson could thus become Sweden’s first female prime minister, as Löfven is soon expected to submit his resignation application.

Andersson was elected new party leader at the Social Democrats’ national meeting on Thursday.

She has been Sweden’s Minister of Finance since 2014 and was, two years before, the fiscal policy spokesperson for the party when the Social Democrats were in the opposition.
