A man has been attacked and injured by a polar bear in Mohnbukta on the east side of Spitsbergen. The extent of the injuries is not known.
The attack was reported at 9:25 AM on Tuesday. The Governor’s helicopter is on its way to the scene with a doctor on board.
“The polar bear has been shot and killed,” the Governor reports.
Communications adviser at the Governor of Svalbard Terje Carlsen told newspaper Svalbardposten that they do not currently have information on the extent of the injuries.
It is not known if the injured person is a permanent resident of Svalbard.
