A man in his mid-50s died Monday at Haukeland University Hospital after receiving a high dose of chemotherapy, according to the hospital.

The dose the man received was ten times higher than the one he should have had, Haukeland University Hospital writes in a press release.

Although the mistake was discovered before he received the entire dose, the injuries were so severe that his life was unable to save.

– “This is a tragic event for the patient and relatives, which we strongly regret. Our thoughts and compassion go to the patient’s nearest,” says acting director Terje Nordberg at the cancer department at Haukeland University Hospital.

The case is reported to the Norwegian Health Authority and the police. In addition, an internal investigation has been initiated and concrete measures have been put in place to prevent this from happening again.

“It should be safe to receive treatment at the hospital,” says Nordberg.

The hospital does not want to comment further on the matter as long as it is a supervisory case.
