A man in his 50s who was attacked with a knife at a shopping center in Bergen has died. His son – a man in his 30s – has been arrested and charged in the case, the police say.

The police were notified of the incident at around 5 PM on Friday at the parking garage of the Vestkanten shopping center in Loddefjord in Bergen.

The man in his 50s was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead half an hour later.

“A woman in her 50s was also involved. She was treated on the spot. She should not be seriously injured,” operations manager Tom Johannessen in the Western Police District stated in a press release.

Son charged

The deceased man and the injured woman were married. The accused is the son of the deceased man.

“The man is charged with the murder of the man and with inflicting bodily injuries to the woman,” Johannesen added.

A security guard at the mall arrested the man in his 30s. The guard kept the man there until the police arrived at the scene.

The accused man was also injured in the incident, the police told the newspaper Bergens Tidende earlier Friday. A knife that the police believe was used in the incident has been seized.

The man has been appointed Marius Wesenberg as defense counsel.

“He has expressed that he is willing to explain himself in court tomorrow. He will also take a position on the question of guilt in court,” Wesenberg told the newspaper late Friday night.
