A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years of preventive detention in the Court of Appeal for killing Thea Halvorsen Braavold in Sandefjord. The court believes the murder was bestial.

The minimum period is set at 13 years. The man must also pay reparation and compensation totaling NOK 250,000.

The man has always denied having anything to do with the murder, but the Agder Court of Appeal ruled that there is no doubt that the 47-year-old is the one who brutally killed 31-year-old Thea Halvorsen Braavold in an apartment in Sandefjord on February 2, 2020.

“Thea is dead, Thea is dead”

“The Court of Appeal considers the murder to have taken place under particularly aggravating circumstances,” the verdict states.

They also believe that the murder appears to be bestial.

The Court of Appeal referred, among other things, to the discovery of the man’s DNA on the murder weapon. In addition, the statements of a friend – who the 47-year-old sought out shortly after Braavold was killed – were important.

“Thea is dead, Thea is dead. I hope you can forgive me. I have to live with this for the rest of my life,” the man told the witness.

The 47-year-old also showered at his friend’s and washed his clothes.

The friend went to Braavold’s apartment with two other people after hearing out the 47-year-old. The three of them found the 31-year-old woman dead.

Sentenced to 21 years in preventive detention in the district court

The man was sentenced to 21 years in preventive detention for the murder in Vestfold District Court last summer. In the district court, the 47-year-old claimed that someone else killed his girlfriend.

He linked it to a murder that he was convicted of in 2003 – the so-called Stoa murder in which a gang leader was abused and killed.

He was released in 2018. In addition to the previous murder conviction, the man has been convicted eight times before for other crimes. He had been out of jail for just three months when Braavold was killed.
