The case of recall of citizenship resumed in parliament. The MDG and SV called for both a court case and a statute of limitations.

“It’s time to take the fundamental debate about if there is no time when you can be sure if you can live here,” said MDG’s Une Aina Bastholm to Klassekampen newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the Immigration Directorate (UDI) has recalled 142 citizenships since 2012, making a lot of people stateless.

While terrorists can not be deprived of their Norwegian citizenship unless they are nationals also in another country, other principles apply to refugees who have provided the wrong identity. For these people, for example, there is no deadline for when the administration can declare a recall.

Last year, the majority agreed with the proposal that citizenship should be recalled only by court judgment. Parliament asked for recall cases to be suspended. At the moment, 36 cases are suspended within UDI pending court proceedings.

“I am going to ask the government and request parliament for judicial review,” said Bastholm.

In addition, she will gather the opposition on a proposal for a date, something Rødt and SV support.

“We will challenge the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) and Venstre (V) to continue to be in favour of the proposal we voted for last year. We must investigate a possible age for recall of citizenship,” said SV’s Karin Andersen.
