According to the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness, cyber attacks will intensify in the future. Municipalities are asked to take the cyber threat seriously.

Digital blackmail, so-called ransomware attacks, is something that the ministry is particularly worried about.

“For us, it is important that the municipalities can be even better equipped to prevent and handle digital attacks that can have major consequences for the inhabitants,” Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Emilie Enger Mehl (SP) stated.

Most previous cyber attacks could have been avoided, she pointed out.

“For the government, it is important that all municipalities take the cyber threat very seriously and follow the authorities’ recommendations. You can not fully guard yourself, but over 80% of the incidents where the National Security Authority had to provide assistance could have been avoided with very basic security measures,” Mehl added.

“Can be demanding”

Mehl and Minister of Local Government and District Affairs Bjørn Arild Gram (SP) attended a meeting with 200 of the country’s municipalities on data security on Monday.

Gram emphasized that the municipalities themselves must ensure that they have the basic security measures of their networks and systems in place.

“With the difficult financial situation many municipalities have faced in the last eight years, I am aware that this can be demanding. The government is in the process of strengthening municipal finances so that small and medium-sized municipalities can also have more room to prioritize digital security,” he said.
