The new Agder prison holds 300 inmates and is the country’s largest high-security prison. Justice Minister Monica Maeland (Høyre) was at the opening in Mandal on Monday.

The prison can hold 100 inmates in Mandal and 200 in Froland. Particular emphasis has been placed on digitization, which gives inmates access to digital self-services from Nav, the tax administration, the health service and the municipality. They will also have the opportunity to communicate with relatives.

“The prison marks an important boost for the Norwegian correctional service. Modern prison buildings provide better conditions for both inmates and staff,” says Mæland in a press release.

“The solutions provide more effective control of prisoners and visitors, and are essential for returning prisoners to the community after the completion of the sentence,” she says.

Despite the corona pandemic, the opening has not been delayed. In addition, the price of the new prison is lower than initially estimated.
