Italy, Germany, and several other countries introduced entry bans for most travelers from South Africa and several neighboring countries.

Only German citizens can enter the country from the affected countries, and they must go into quarantine for 14 days, regardless of their vaccination status, Minister of Health Jens Spahn announced on Friday.

“The last thing we need now is a newly introduced variant that causes even more problems,” Spahn said.

Austria and Israel have also introduced bans on foreign travelers from the affected countries.

Travel ban

Italy banned all travelers from southern Africa. Health Minister Roberto Speranza says the country must act with maximum caution while scientists investigate the new virus variant.

The travel bans apply to the countries of South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, and Swaziland.

The UK announced a halt to all flights from the countries on Thursday night.
