People’s trust in the police is declining slightly, but eight out of ten Norwegians still have fairly much or great confidence in law enforcement, according to a new survey.

While 80% had fairly or very much confidence in the police in 2021, the figures in 2020 and 2019 were 82 and 79%, respectively.

On average, the inhabitants of the police districts of Oslo, the southeast, and Innlandet have the highest trust in the police, while the trust is lowest in Agder and Finnmark, a new population survey shows.

Respondents have the best impression of the police’s handling of traffic accidents, disturbances, and robberies. However, respondents aren’t as convinced that the police do a great job when it comes to incidents related to digital crime.

93% of respondents said they feel very or fairly safe in the area where they travel and live, which is a marginal decrease from 2020.

“It is gratifying that the police maintain their high level of trust in the population. Trust is something we must earn every day, and it is thanks to the good efforts of the employees in the police that we rank stably high on this survey,” police director Benedicte Bjørnland said.
