Dozens of people were arrested, and seven people, including police officers, were injured when a corona demonstration turned into a riot in the Netherlands.

The police were forced to fire warning shots.

“There are wounded people in connection with shots being fired,” a statement from the police in Rotterdam noted on late Friday night.

The police have not stated how many people were hit by the warning shots, but the broadcaster NOS later reported that two people were injured as a result. A water cannon was also used against the protesters.

Hundreds of people took part in the demonstration against a partial corona lockdown that took effect last Saturday.

Rioting

According to the police, the demonstration turned into a riot, and protesters set things on fire in several places and threw objects at police and firefighters.

The protesters also set fire to several electric scooters.

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb described the riots as “an orgy of violence.”

“The police eventually had to draw weapons to defend themselves,” he said.
