Edvard Munch’s ‘Girls on the Bridge’ (Pikene på broen) went under the hammer for just over NOK 472 million when it was auctioned in New York on Monday night.

The auction house Sotheby’s had already estimated that the picture would fetch just over $ 50 million, and the final winning bid was for $ 56,487,500.

Converted at the current exchange rate, that is over 472 million Norwegian kroner.

There are twelve known versions of the image. The painting that was sold in New York portrays the girls who gave the picture its name, which is a little different to the most famous version.

Despite the staggering price, ‘Girls on the Bridge’ is only half as valuable as Munch’s most famous painting.

In 2012 a version of ‘The Scream’ (Skrik) sold for $ 119.9 million at the same auction house in New York.
