The British variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Bjørnafjorden Municipality. The mutated virus is more contagious than the original virus.

The mutated virus was discovered after a man in his 50s was diagnosed with the coronavirus in Bjørnafjorden Municipality on January 2, newspaper Bergensavisen writes.

The man’s sample was forwarded for further analysis after the man was in close contact with a person who had come to Norway from the United Kingdom.

Bjørnafjorden Municipality states that with the exception of two close contacts, there is no suspicion of further spread.

“These two close contacts have certainly had this virus variant as well, but only the sample of the man in his 50s was sent to mutation analysis,” chief municipal medical officer Klaus Melf said.
