NATO condemned Russia’s “horrific attack” on Ukraine. It also condemned Belarus for making the attack possible.

“We are deploying additional defensive land and air forces in the eastern part of the alliance – in addition to additional maritime forces. We have increased our preparedness so that our forces can respond to all necessary situations,” NATO wrote in a statement.

“We have decided to take further steps to strengthen the defense throughout the alliance. Our measures are and remain preventive, proportionate, and non-escalating.”

Unprovoked

NATO called the Russian attack on Ukraine “unjustified and unprovoked,” calling it a serious violation of international law.

“Our thoughts are with all those killed and injured, and with the people of Ukraine,” the statement said.

Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine on Thursday.

No response from Russia

“We have repeatedly invited Russia to talks in the NATO-Russia Council. Russia has not responded. It is Russia, and Russia alone, that has chosen to escalate the situation,” NATO added.

NATO said that it stands with the people of Ukraine and its legitimate, democratically elected president, National Assembly, and government, and that it fully supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty within its borders.

“We urge Russia to immediately halt its military actions and withdraw all its forces in and around Ukraine.”
