A Syrian has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the murder of a soldier loyal to the Assad regime in Syria.

The 49-year-old man, identified in the Dutch media as Ahmad Al K., was convicted of taking part in an execution platoon that killed a regime soldier in 2012.

He was convicted under the universal rule that suspects of genocide or war crimes can be prosecuted regardless of where they are or where the crime occurred.

Since the murder took place after the regime soldier had surrendered, the court in The Hague processed it as a war crime.

The verdict is the first in the Netherlands for a war crime committed in Syria.
