Professor Gunnar Bovim will lead the government’s new Health Personnel Commission. The commission will assess Norway’s health personnel and expertise needs by 2040.

“The commission is highly relevant in response to the need we have seen since the pandemic began, in terms of having more professionals, the staffing of the future health service, and better a division of tasks between the professions. Therefore, this has a high priority for the government,” Minister of Health and Care Services Ingvild Kjerkol (AP) said.

The commission’s main task will therefore be to establish a knowledge base and propose effective measures to train, recruit, and retain qualified personnel in the health and care service throughout the country, it is stated in a press release.

Innovation and mobilization

The commission will, among other things, assess how innovation through digitalization, technology, and new forms of work can affect the future need for personnel in health services.

It will also look more closely at how unused labor can be qualified and mobilized.

Professor and neurologist Gunnar Bovim was appointed head of the commission, which will present its report on February 1, 2023.

Bovim is a former rector at NTNU and is now associated with the university’s management as an advisor for teaching and research policy tasks.

Lack of professionals

“Professionals are the most important resource we have to be able to provide safe and good health and care services.

“One of the biggest challenges in the health and care service in the years ahead will be the lack of professionals. This is already a problem in several parts of the service, not least in the districts,” Kjerkol emphasized.

The new Health Personnel Commission has a total of 16 members.
