New EU regulations now require all electric cars to be equipped with a noise system to alert pedestrians that a car is nearby.

The regulations come into force from Monday on, and will also affect Norwegian motorists.

The new rules mean that the electric cars must emit a continuous noisy sound when the cars have a speed of less than 20 kilometers per hour, or when the cars reverse. The sound should have a minimum strength of 56 decibels.

So far, this will only apply to new electric cars. Cars already on the market must be equipped with a new noise system by 1 July 2021.

Electric cars make very little noise at low speed, and the Association for the Blind is among those who have advocated what they believe is dangerous traffic
