51-year-old Kari Mangrud Alvsvåg highlighted the good in the midst of evil when she was ordained as a bishop in Borg on Sunday.

The solemn service took place in Fredrikstad Cathedral on Sunday with King Harald present.

After the wedding, Alvsvåg gave the sermon. There she addressed both global warming and the war in Ukraine. According to the bishop, good forces find their way through the darkness.

“You look at the news, and in the middle of a bombed-out district, from a broken building, rescuers carry a woman giving birth, and you see and believe: There is goodness in the middle of evil,” Alvsvåg said.

Alvsvåg is taking over from Atle Sommerfeldt, who has been bishop of Borg since 2012. The diocese includes eastern parts of Viken county, with Fredrikstad Cathedral as the episcopal see.

Alvsvåg was elected with 11 of 17 votes in the Church Council in February.
