New speed limits at sea in Norway entered into force on January 1

Comprehensive new state regulation for speed limits at sea came into force on January 1 this year. Some speed limits signs may thus be outdated.

The new regulations from the Norwegian Coastal Administration mean that 125 local speed regulations in 95 municipalities are repealed.

“This means that there will be new speed limits in some areas. Feel free to check the map that shows the regulation of speed for commercial vessels and the map that shows speed limits for recreational vessels,” Sven Martin Tønnessen at the Norwegian Coastal Administration noted.

The Norwegian Maritime Directorate warns that seafarers may experience that the signs showing the speed limit are not correct up to the spring period.

“This is because both the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the municipalities need some time to make the necessary changes to the signs.”
