It is still very rare for fully vaccinated people to get the coronavirus, but those who have weakened immune systems become infected more often and get more ill, according to a new study published in the Journal of Medical Economics.
The researchers, who come from Pfizer, analyzed 1.2 million medical records from people who have been fully vaccinated in the United States. 17.7% of them had weakened immune systems due to disorders such as advanced HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney disease, and a number of others.
Barely 0.08% of the fully vaccinated were infected with COVID-19. Out of the proportion, 38% of them had weakened immune systems. Those with weakened immune systems also accounted for 60% of hospital admissions and all deaths among people in the study.
“The results of this study promote understanding of outcomes after vaccination and support the recommendation to give the third dose of the corona vaccine to patients with weaker immune systems,” Manuela Di Fusco from Pfizer’s research team noted.
