The Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry (NHO) believes that reduced use of consultants in the public sector will harm the business community.

“A consequence that society would face is that government agencies would have reduced access to expertise. It would have a detrimental effect,” business policy director Nils-Ola Widme in Abelia told the newspaper Aftenposten.

Abelia is NHO’s national association for knowledge and technology companies. In a recent document, the Norwegian government has instructed the ministries to reduce the use of consultants in 2022. The purchase of services from the communications industry has been singled out in particular.

Widme believes the government didn’t consider the consequences of building competence in the ministries.

“Most likely, they have to spend huge amounts on internal competence development and replace experts at a high pace as the competence needs change. This is unrealistic and has not been taken into account in the state budget,” he stated.
