Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to researchers who discovered hepatitis C virus

On Monday, it was announced that the Nobel Prize in Medicine would be awarded to researchers who discovered the hepatitis C virus – Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles M. Rice.

The Swedish Karolinska Institutet announced the news.

Alter and Rice are Americans, while Houghton is from the United Kingdom.

The researchers received the prize for their contributions to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis C, which causes chronic liver damage and liver cancer.

As a result of the corona pandemic, there has been extra attention around the Nobel Prize in Medicine this year.
