The British variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Nordre Follo. The entire municipality will be closed until Wednesday, and residents are asked not to travel anywhere.

“This is a serious and confusing situation,” Mayor Hanne Opdan (AP) said at an urgent press conference about the outbreak on Friday.

Two cases of the British virus mutation at Langhus center in Nordre Follo have been confirmed

The two people who have been diagnosed with the mutated virus are both dead, the National Institute of Public Health (FHI) stated.

Both were over 90 years old.

The virus may have spread to a kindergarten, the Norwegian Directorate of Health wrote in a press release on Friday.

Høie: Feared and expected

Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) describes the situation as serious.

“This is a serious situation that we have both feared and expected,” Høie noted in a press release on Friday.

“This is the first example of the spread of this virus in Norway where we do not know the route of infection.

“This shows how important it is that we maintain the national measures and entry restrictions with a quarantine obligation,” he emphasized.

The outbreak also worries department director Line Vold at the FHI.

“This is serious since we have not yet found any known route of transmission for this outbreak, for example, from travelers from the UK,” Vold stated in a press release.
