Norway and Sweden are now one step closer to getting a better railway connection between Oslo and Stockholm, according to the Swedish project company Oslo – Sthlm255.

On Tuesday, the Swedish political parties Moderaterna, Kristdemokraterna, and Vänsterpartiet presented a committee initiative to speed up the work of improving the train connection between Oslo and Stockholm.

There is a broad majority for the proposal in the Swedish parliament (Riksdag).

“Now the Riksdag will most likely decide to give the Swedish government the task of giving the Swedish Transport Administration a formal assignment to start investigating how to put in place a better railway connection between the capitals,” press contact Jonas Karlsson in the project company stated.

No formal decisions

So far, there have been no formal decisions or specific assignments regarding the project on the Swedish side. A similar initiative from the Norwegian Labor Party and the Socialist Left Party was discussed in the Storting a year ago.

In September last year, the government commissioned the Norwegian Railway Directorate to launch a study of the Oslo-Stockholm project. But on the Swedish side, it has taken longer.

It is not known when a final decision will be made on the Swedish side and when the Swedish Transport Administration may be tasked with setting up a joint study with the Norwegian Railway Directorate.
