It will now officially be allowed to hoist the Pride flag on public flagpoles while local events take place, the newspaper Norge IDAG reports. The Flag Act has been changed to make this possible.
A majority in the Norwegian parliament (Storting) voted on Tuesday to allow the Pride flag to be hoisted on all municipal flagpoles.
Until now, it has only been allowed to hoist the Norwegian and Sami flags, in addition to municipal and county flags, on public flagpoles.
The amendment means that it will also be possible to use other flags during “events, markings, or anniversaries of public interest.”
That also applies to the UN flag.
Complaints
According to Norge IDAG, there were “thousands of complaints” in the written consultation round, but the proposal was voted through. Only the Progress Party (FRP) voted against the proposal. The Christian Democrats (KRF) were also critical but ended voting in favor.
The proposal was presented by Minister Nikolai Astrup (H) last summer.
