Norway condemned the death sentences in Myanmar and urged Myanmar not to carry out the executions.

On Friday, the junta in Myanmar sentenced 19 people to death.

In a Twitter message on Saturday, Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide (H) sharply distances herself from the verdict.

“The death sentence against 19 people in Myanmar is unacceptable and an alarming development. Norway urges Myanmar not to carry out the executions, stop the violence, and let the UN special envoy in,” Søreide noted.

The military television station Myawaddy reports that the 19 have been convicted of killing a person associated with a captain in the army. Seventeen of the persons have been convicted in absentia.

It is the first verdict of its kind since the military seized power in a coup on February 1.
