The Norwegian Environment Agency has provided NOK 60 million to support projects related to clean-up or prevention of marine litter.

“Plastic pollution is a serious threat to marine life. Therefore, the government works both nationally and internationally to prevent plastic from ending up as rubbish in nature and the sea. If it still happens, we must clean up,” Minister of the Environment Sveinung Rotevatn (V) said in a statement.

The grants are divided into 40 projects. The Norwegian Environment Agency received a total of 90 applications.

According to the Norwegian Environment Agency, marine litter is a major environmental challenge, and its scope seems to be increasing.
