There have been 239 applications from Afghans who have worked for the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be allowed to move to safety in Norway.

During the 20 years that the war in Afghanistan lasted, Norway employed multiple interpreters, cleaning workers, and other Afghans. Many have feared for their own lives since the Taliban took power last year.

Together, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have received 239 applications following the new instructions given for refugee applications, the newspaper Vårt Land reports. The deadline for applying was set for September 1.

“We are working on processing all the cases,” Deputy Director Ann Kristin Salbuvik in the Ministry of Defense told Vårt Land.

The Ministry of Justice will ultimately assess the cases, after the review of the other two ministries is finished.
