Norway has registered a notable increase in the number of people who become corona infected for the second time since the omicron variant appeared in the country.

In the first week of 2022, 30 times more people were reinfected than in the week before the omicron variant was first detected in Norway. In week 47, 59 people were registered as infected for the second time. In week 48, when omicron appeared in Norway, the number was 106. Since then, the number of cases has exploded, the newspaper Aftenposten writes, referring to the FHI’s weekly report for week one.

A total of 3,756 people were reinfected during the pandemic. 38% of the cases occurred during the five weeks up to and including week one.

Increasing infection in society leads to an increase in the number of reinfected people, Aftenposten writes, adding that the omicron variant also circumvents immunity to an extent.

While only 0.3% of those who were infected by the delta variant had been infected before, the proportion amounts to 3.8% for omicron-infected people.
